]]>Highlander XSE: More Fun for Everyone
In the Toyota world, the XSE badge signals a drive on the sporty side with specially tuned handling suspension, unique exterior styling, and exclusive interior trim. For 2021, and for the first time in its 20-year history, the Highlander family SUV gets the XSE treatment.
Starting at an MSRP of $41,405 for the FWD variant, the Highlander XSE combines bold exterior design with more agile driving reflexes. Positioned between the XLE and Limited grades, the 2021 Highlander XSE is briskly motivated by a 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 that’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s available with either Front-Wheel Drive or Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive.
In addition to being able to send up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels, this advanced available AWD system can control the left/right torque distribution to the rear wheels for a more engaging driving experience. In addition, the Multi-Terrain Select feature, controlled by a dial on the center console, allows the driver to adjust drivetrain responses to prevailing road and weather conditions.
The Highlander XSE handles curves as well as its design takes compliments. In addition to exclusive machined-faced 20-inch wheels with black accents, the XSE model is equipped with higher-rate springs and rear stabilizer bar, and the shock absorbers have been re-tuned for lower friction. Electric power steering has also been re-tuned for a sportier steering feel. These carefully calibrated new parts boost handling agility for the XSE while preserving Highlander’s renowned ride comfort.
To make the XSE grade, Highlander received a bumper-to-bumper style makeover. The front fascia, grille, and lower spoiler are exclusive to this model and impart a more aggressive stance. The restyled upper grille joins a much larger lower air intake integrated into the new bumper, with a spoiler below that. Unique headlamps feature black accents and light-strip DRLs.
In profile, unique rocker panels add an edgy accent to the Highlander XSE’s sculpted lines. Around back, there’s a shocker: the first-ever twin-tip exhaust on a Highlander. Black roof rails, mirror caps, and window moldings dial up the subtle cool factor.
Inside, the Highlander XSE rocks black SofTex®-trimmed seats with fabric inserts, while ambient lighting and carbon-fiber finish on the instrument panel sets the mood. A striking two-tone red and black leather-trimmed interior with red-stitched instrument panel is available. The 2021 Highlander XSE comes ready to take on all devices with Android AutoTM, Apple CarPlay®, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, as well as five USB ports and an all access 3-month trial of SiriusXM®.
The Highlander XSE will also offer an available Premium Audio 1200-Watt, 11-speaker JBL® sound system and dynamic navigation with a 3-year trial.
Upgraded to Standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ (TSS 2.5+)
Whether they’re young families or empty nesters exploring a new chapter in life, safety remains a top priority for Highlander customers. For 2021, the Toyota Highlander is upgraded with standard Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.5+), a comprehensive suite of active safety systems that includes:
Additionally, for 2021, the L, LE, and XLE, headlamps are updated to a projector-style lamp for even better visibility.
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection offers automatic braking capability under certain circumstances should the driver not react in time in a system-detected emergency situation. Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are standard on LE grade and above. Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) is available with clearance sonar on Limited and above.
The standard backup camera features projected path, while the Limited’s backup camera comes standard with dynamic gridlines. A Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan is available on Limited and standard on Platinum and provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle.
The 2021 Highlander is equipped with eight airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows. Toyota’s Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Smart Stop Technology (SST). Hybrid models will receive Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) as well. VDIM provides integrated control of the ABS, brake assist, TRAC, VSC, hill-start assist control and EPS systems. It helps to maintain vehicle stability when swerving on slippery road surfaces by controlling the brakes, hybrid system output and steering assist.
The Strong, Athletic Type
Setting off the bold design, the L, LE and XLE grades feature a black front grille with silver-colored paint surround, while the Limited and Platinum grades are distinguished by a black grille with chrome-colored trim, high output LED fog lights, and the Highlander’s first-ever 20-inch alloy wheels. The Platinum grade stands apart with silver-colored painted front bumper and rear fascia and a unique 20-inch wheel.
While Highlander’s design will turn heads everywhere it goes, it’s also highly functional. Greater aerodynamic efficiency reduces wind noise while enhancing vehicle stability.
The presence of takumi is evident whenever the driver experiences the Highlander’s premium touch and feel in everyday driving. Throughout vehicle development, these highly trained master craftsmen focused on the finest technical details to ensure a level of operating smoothness in all driving conditions, especially at everyday speeds.
Interior Details
Looking sporty does not come at the expense of practicality in the 2021 Highlander. The L and LE grades come standard with second-row bench for seating for eight, while the XLE and Limited grade come standard with a Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven and the option of second-row bench for seating for eight. Finally, the Platinum grade will come standard with Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven. Either way, the large rear doors provide easy access, while versatile seat folding features make it easy to enter the third row. And, passengers in the third row stay comfortable thanks to standard three-zone climate control that ensures ample flow of warmed or cooled air.
With all seat rows in use, Highlander offers 16.0 cu. ft. of carrying space behind the third row. Folding the 60/40 split fold-flat third-row seatbacks opens the space to 48.4 cu. ft., and then folding the second row raises that to 84.3 cu. ft. The versatile cargo area makes the most of its additional length with side surfaces and pockets shaped for maximum space usage.
Power, Performance and Panache … with Efficiency
Power and efficiency are a whole lot sexier when wrapped in Highlander’s striking design. The 2021 Highlander offers a choice between two advanced powertrains, a gas V6 or the Toyota Hybrid System.
The 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 is the epitome of smoothness. Its Toyota-innovated D-4S Injection system combines direct fuel injection with port fuel injectors to help optimize efficiency, power and emissions in all conditions. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) likewise helps ensure ideal response and efficiency at all engine speeds.
That translates into 295 horsepower and 263 lb.-ft. of torque, which further translates into exemplary everyday performance and generous towing capability. The Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission maximizes Highlander’s acceleration and highway merging capability while operating seamlessly and transparently.
On V6 models, the available towing package enables a 5,000-pound towing capacity. The package includes a heavy-duty radiator with engine oil cooler. Trailer Sway Control (TSC) uses the Vehicle Stability Control to help control unwanted trailer movement.
Why use fuel when you don’t need to? The Highlander’s standard Stop and Start Engine System allows the engine to shut off when the vehicle comes to a complete stop, and then instantly restarts when the driver’s foot lifts from the brake pedal. This technology helps reduce fuel consumption and cuts emissions.
Hybrid Aims Even Higher
The Toyota Hybrid System in the 2021 Highlander Hybrid combines a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric. The gas engine employs Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system by Electric motor (VVT-iE) on the intake camshaft, and VVT-i on the exhaust camshaft. A variable cooling system (electric water pump, electric thermostat) and a fully variable oil pump help to further enhance engine efficiency.
The bottom line is an eye opener for the efficiency-minded: 243 total system horsepower and up to an EPA-estimated 36 combined MPG. The hybrid is available in either front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD.)
The transaxle mounts the electric motors (MG1 and MG2) coaxially rather than in-line, and the resulting smaller and lighter package reduces frictional losses. The gas engine and MG2 work in concert to deliver dynamic performance, while both MG1 and MG2 charge the hybrid battery.
To reduce the transaxle’s size and weight, the reduction gear is a parallel shaft gear rather than a planetary gear, and a multi-function gear integrates the power-split planetary ring gear, parking gear, and counter-drive gear. Computer integration and a smaller, lighter power stack installed directly above the transaxle help reduce energy transmission losses.
The battery pack is small enough to be installed under the rear seats so it does not take up any cargo or passenger space. This means Highlander Hybrid drivers get all the benefits of a hybrid powertrain without sacrificing much-needed cargo room for everyday activities.
Seamless Everyday Performance
The Highlander Hybrid delivers its exemplary fuel economy and performance without calling attention to its high-tech powertrain operation. Quite the contrary, like all Toyota Hybrid vehicles, it simply goes about its business in a transparent way. For example, the system optimizes the level of electric motor assistance and gas engine speed without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronized with vehicle speed, yielding effortless and quiet acceleration.
As on many modern vehicles, the Highlander Hybrid offers selectable NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes that let the driver choose the vehicle’s performance personality. The bonus is the EV mode, which allows electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances.
SPORT mode unlocks boost from the hybrid system for improved acceleration response. ECO mode gets maximum efficiency from the fuel and battery, while NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving.
Special, easy-to-use hybrid tech adds an element of control and fun. Using a sequential shifting feature, the driver can “downshift” to increase the regenerative braking in steps, which helps foster greater control when driving in hilly areas, for example.
The 2021 Highlander Hybrid can also coach the driver to drive as economically as possible. For example, an accelerator guide function suggests an acceleration level to the driver according to the driving conditions, and a scoring function adds a measure of fun-to-eco driving.
Features for More Efficiency
Highlander Hybrid’s Predictive Efficient Drive (PED) analyzes the driver’s daily driving habits and upcoming road and traffic conditions to more efficiently charge and discharge the hybrid battery accordingly alongside actual driving.
The more the vehicle is driven, the more data is accumulated, contributing to practical fuel efficiency. Many actual roads chosen to represent common usage scenarios, such as in urban congestion or on mountain roads, were driven and analyzed to create control that feels natural to the driver when operating to help enable more efficient driving.
All-Wheel Drive
The 2021 Highlander gets a grip on any road with a choice of FWD or three different available AWD systems — two for the V6 models and a unique AWD system for the Highlander Hybrid. For the Highlander Gas L, LE and XLE models, the optional AWD system can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels to help counter wheel slip when necessary.
Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Drive Mode Select and Driveline Disconnect is available for the Highlander Limited and Platinum for even greater agility and capability. In addition to governing torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, this advanced system uses special couplings to actively manage torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels.
Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD doesn’t need wheel slippage before springing into action. Rather, a sophisticated AWD Integrated Management (AIM) system manages Electric Power Steering (EPS), throttle control, transmission shift control and drive torque distribution to continually help optimize handling.
Using the Multi-Terrain Select control dial on the console, the driver can maximize traction when driving through inclement weather or road conditions. Mud & Sand mode works well for beach driving while Rock & Dirt mode optimizes AWD traction for trails. The driver can monitor, in real time, torque allocation and slip control on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
In addition, Highlander models include the following features for optimal on-road and off-road performance and safety:
AWD is a great traction partner, but it’s not needed all the time, such as during steady highway cruising. In such situations, Rear Driveline Disconnect automatically disengages drive to the rear wheels and stops the propeller shaft’s rotation. As one might guess, that reduces the energy needed to propel the vehicle and, therefore, helps reduce fuel consumption. When AWD is needed, the system instantly re-engages without the driver even noticing.
Hybrid AWD
The 2021 model’s AWD employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. Like the hybrid powertrain itself, the AWD works seamlessly and transparently.
The rear electric motor operates independently with no mechanical connection between the transmission and the rear wheels. Preemptively distributing more driving force to the rear wheels, such as when accelerating, helps suppress front wheel slip during off-the-line starts. The system also helps enhance cornering agility by reducing understeer. And, when venturing onto a trail, the increased rear-wheel torque helps move the Highlander Hybrid confidently over rough or slippery surfaces.
A Certain Level of Comfort
From the L grade to the top-of-line Platinum, the 2021 Highlander offers plush accommodations across all grades. Taking inspiration from luxury crafted interiors to create a more premium ambience, details include softer padded surfaces and a more tailored look with stitching that continues from the door trim to the instrument panel. The dash integrates the multimedia and HVAC controls in an elegant and functional way.
The cabin’s center console offers available Qi wireless charging to plenty of storage spaces and five USB charging ports. On Limited and Platinum grades, ambient LED lighting sets a relaxing mood. Inset steering wheel controls are a modern luxury touch on all grades.
Highlanders have long been renowned for a quiet ride and, with the high-strength TNGA platform, Toyota pushes the bar even higher. Sound-dampening and soundproofing materials are optimized throughout the vehicle with the takumi approach focusing particularly on minimizing noise in the frequencies that interfere with conversation. As an example, Limited and Platinum grades have acoustic glass on the front side windows to further isolate the driver from outside noise.
The seating color palette enhances the sense of luxury permeating the 2021 Highlander. The L and LE grades offer comfortable woven cloth seat surfaces in Graphite or Black; the XLE offers SofTex® -trim in Harvest Beige, Graphite or Black, while the Limited offers those colors in perforated leather-trim. The top-of-line Platinum grade, the most luxurious Highlander ever offered, exclusively features embossed, perforated leather-trim in those three colors plus a luxuriously delicious brown called Glazed Caramel.
Multitalented Multimedia
However passengers listen to music and connect with their worlds, the 2021 Highlander is ready with the latest multimedia systems. All grades come standard with Apple Car Play®, Android AutoTM, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, SiriusXM® All Access 3-month trial and a Wi-Fi connectivity trial.
All Highlander models come equipped with Toyota Safety Connect with a one-year trial subscription.
LE and above grades offer Service and Remote Connectivity. The available audio package for the XLE provides dynamic navigation with a 3-year trial, while the XSE grade and above offer it as standard. A move up to Platinum grade offers the impressive 12.3-inch multimedia screen, which is also available as a package on Limited.
The JBL® Premium Audio System is available as a package on XSE and comes standard for Limited and Platinum grades and rocks music of all genres with 1,200 watts of power playing through 11 speakers in nine locations. Clari-Fi® technology breathes life into compressed digital music formats with the result like a mobile concert. The system will not, however, settle arguments over which music to play.
Safety at Its Core
The 2021 Highlander rides on the TNGA-K platform, along with a suite of standard driver-assist technologies designed to help prevent collisions or to mitigate their impacts.
The 2021 Highlander is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS 2.5+).
A Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, available on Limited and standard on Platinum, provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle.
The 2021 Highlander is equipped with eight airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows. Toyota’s Star Safety System includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
Priced for Value
No matter the grade, every Highlander offers something to suit varying lifestyles, whether it’s for a city exploration or a weekend trip to the countryside. With five gas models and five hybrid models, the 2021 Highlander arrives at dealerships with an option for everyone.
Toyota Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against perforation from corrosion for 60 months with no mileage limitation. Hybrid-related components that require repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first from original date of first use when sold as new. The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and is transferrable across ownership.
The 2021 Highlander also comes with ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance, for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and 2 years of Roadside Assistance, unlimited mileage.

]]>February never gets any warmer here does it? Well it’s not only February, it’s also the first big show of the 2020 season, and I couldn’t be happier that we get to kick things off, right here in Chicago.
As I mentioned during the MAMA breakfast this morning, it’s always great to be in my stomping grounds in the Midwest. This area has made me who I am today.
I grew up here, went to DePaul University down the street and spent many years of my Toyota/Lexus career in this Region.
On the same note, Chicago might also be the death of me, thanks to my beloved Bears. Thank God for the Blackhawks and their success and their three recent Stanley Cups.
Needless to say, my passion for sports has led to some damaged TVs over the years. My wife calls it insanity, I call it fandom. Either way … I guess it could be worse.
For those of you from Detroit who follow the Lions or Redwings …I’m sorry.
In all seriousness, though, I’m also very passionate about this industry and of course Toyota.
Which is why I’m so excited to be up here today. We had a fantastic close to 2019 capping off our year with the start of sales for the 2020 Highlander.
And I’m excited to share that the all-new Highlander Hybrid started production in Indiana this week. You know the Highlander nameplate isn’t just hard-hitting, it’s a standout leader in Toyota’s lineup.
Almost think of it as the Dick Butkus or Brian Urlacher for our team.
But seriously, it’s at the top of a segment that is now over 24 models strong. And with that level of competition, we wanted to kick off this year with a bang. Which is why the 2020 Highlander was the hero of our Super Bowl ad on Sunday.
Let’s take a look.
—
Pretty good, right? The response to this all-new Highlander has been amazing. Customers are loving all of the features that it offers.
All-wheel or Front-wheel drive for every model? Check.
Hybrid Front-wheel drive a first in its segment? Check.
Hybrid with Best-in-class fuel economy and over 600 miles of range?
Check and Check. 600 miles – that’s enough to get from here to…well … any place that’s warm.
So even though Highlander has only been out for a month … we’re already taking it to the next level. I’m excited to reveal for the very first time the all-new 2021 Highlander XSE.
—
And there you have it. Pretty nice, huh? As you’ve seen over the past few years the XSE models such as Camry, Avalon, RAV4 and Corolla, bring dedicated styling and performance.
This Highlander XSE achieves just that, bringing a sleek exterior styling package that promises to turn heads.
Rocker panels, a sportier grille, blacked-out accents. Not something you’d expect on a Highlander, right?
Check out these new 20-inch wheels, exclusive to the XSE. Also, you’ll see twin-tip exhaust, a Highlander first.
Moving to the inside, this vibrant red interior immediately catches your attention. This is the boldest interior we’ve ever offered in a Highlander.
When looking at performance, the XSE has an all-new sport-tuned suspension and Dynamic Torque Vectoring on the all-wheel drive powertrain. It will be the best handling Highlander ever.
This Highlander XSE is the full package and now helps round out the complete portfolio. I’m happy to share that it will go on sale fall of this year.
Now, in case any of you missed our news from last night, we have three new Nightshade models.
You can see the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia Nightshade Editions right out here. Now offered on eight of our nameplates, Nightshade continues to drive enhanced styling across the Toyota portfolio.
Like the 4Runner Nightshade already in market, these additions carry premium features and will come equipped with black painted wheels, a darkened chrome grille, blacked-out exterior badging … and more.
Later this summer, our truck and Sequoia enthusiasts can now “Own the Night,” so to speak.
Of course … we want them to “own the day” as well.
You see, truck and SUV owners need versatility in the vehicles they drive. They want a commuter and a hauler – plenty of performance but also plenty of practicality for camping, hiking or even a simple weekend getaway.
So with these customers in mind we designed our new Trail Special Editions. Starting with the Tacoma, the first feature I’m sure you notice are the two lockable storage boxes in the bed. How cool is that? Perfect for storing tools, tie downs or fishing gear. Even better, the driver side is insulated, which makes for a perfect cooler on-the-go.
This feature is also available on the Tundra Trail Edition, which has the popular 1794 Edition grille.
All of the Trail Edition Models Feature black seating and unique tan stitching throughout the cab.
So, now that you know of some of the details, let’s see them in action.
—
Oh, you didn’t think I’d stand up here and talk about conquering the trail without 4Runner, did you? How awesome is that Yakima rack? Standard on the Trail edition.
Continuing the theme of extra storage, the 4Runner Trail comes with a custom cooler that secures easily to the standard sliding rear cargo tray. It’s removable and lockable making it the perfect companion for campsites or tailgates. And I don’t know if you noticed, but the color is the same as the exterior of the vehicle.
Speaking of color, all three Trail Editions will be available in Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black and Super White.
And I’m happy to say customers can start enjoying these new offerings late summer of this year.
As you can see, it’s a very exciting time for Toyota.
Overall, we could not be positioned better for a successful 2020. We’ve got the players, we’ve got the drive and we will work hard to welcome more people to the Toyota family.
These three new Trail Special Editions and Nightshade models along with the all-new Highlander XSE are sure to attract adventure seeking customers.
On behalf of Toyota, thank you for joining us today. Please enjoy your stay here in Chicago, try to get by Portillo’s for a hot dog and I wish you all safe travels getting home.
Please allow photographers a few moments to get some shots before you come on the stage.
Thanks and have a great day!

These join five other Toyotas already available with the cool, dark Nightshade treatment.
Highlander XSE: More Fun for the Parents
In the Toyota world, the XSE badge signals a drive on the sporty side with specially tuned handling suspension, unique exterior styling, and exclusive interior trim. For 2021, and for the first time in its 20-year history, the Highlander family SUV gets the XSE treatment. The fourth-generation Highlander, just introduced for 2020 and built on the Toyota New Global Architecture, offers the ideal platform for an athletic transformation.
Designed for people who need SUV practicality but really miss driving sport sedans, the Highlander XSE combines bold exterior design with more agile driving reflexes. Positioned between the XLE and Limited grades, the 2021 Highlander XSE is briskly motivated by a 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 that’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the Highlander XSE rocks black Softex-trimmed seats with fabric inserts, while ambient lighting and carbon-fiber finish on the instrument panel sets the mood. A striking two-tone red and black leather-trimmed interior with red-stitched instrument panel is available and is sure to incite a bit of carpool envy.,
The 2021 Highlander XSE comes ready to take on all devices with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa compatibility, as well as five USB ports and an all access 3-month trail of SiriusXM®.
The Highlander XSE will also offer an available Premium Audio 1200-Watt, 11-speaker JBL sound system with dynamic navigation, breathing new life into old hair bands.
Toyota anticipates that about 12 percent of Highlander buyers will opt for this edgier family hauler. Other updates to the 2021 Highlander will be announced later, but the XSE is slated for launch this fall.
2021 Trail Special Editions: Carry In, Carry Out In Style
Toyota truck buyers love the great outdoors, and in fact, Toyota trucks sit at the top of their segments for owners who participate in outdoor activities like camping, fishing, and hiking. To celebrate and support all that fresh-air fun, Toyota is introducing the 2021 Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner Trail Special Editions this summer. All put emphasis on extra storage and convenience, with unique styling and exclusive content added for good measure.
All three 2021 Toyota Trails are based on the SR5 grade models to deliver high value, and they also offer the choice of 2WD or 4WD. The Tacoma Trail is built on the SR5 Double Cab, and the Tundra Trail is based on the SR5 Crew Max with SR5 Upgrade Package (larger fuel tank, front bucket seats with driver’s power lumbar support, front center console, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, three front cupholders, and an anti-theft system with alarm and engine immobilizer).
Available Trail color choices include Army Green, Cement, Midnight Black, and Super White. While these are not strictly considered limited editions, volume will be low. Toyota is planning to equip 7,000 Tacomas, 5,000 Tundras and 4,000 4Runners as Trail Editions.
All Trails feature black exterior badging, plus black seating with tan stitching. In all versions, standard all-weather floor liners help catch the outdoor elements that come in on occupants’ feet. From there, each Trail model has its own unique set of upgrades:
Custom-made for Toyota in the U.S., the 4Runner Trail’s cooler is quite a versatile piece of equipment, featuring:
The cooler comes color-keyed with Cement or Army Green exterior 4Runner colors, while on Super White and Midnight Black 4Runner Trails the cooler is Cement.
Nightshade Special Editions: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark
With the close of summer comes shorter days and earlier sunsets – the perfect time for a trio of new 2021 Toyota Nightshade Editions to make their arrival. Toyota already offers Nightshade Editions of the Corolla Sedan, Corolla Hatchback, Camry, 4Runner, and Sienna van.
While most Toyota Nightshade models are based on SE grade versions, the 2021 Nightshade pickups and Sequoia are built on the more luxurious Limited grade models. All have black leather-trim seating and slightly sinister looking black exterior trim, including a darkened chrome grille, black mirror caps and black door handles. All three of the Toyota Nightshade trucks offer the choice of 2WD or 4WD.
From there, the details vary by model. The Tacoma Nightshade is also distinguished by Dark Smoke 18-inch alloy wheels, black exhaust tip and fog light bezels, and a new grille insert design.
The Tundra Nightshade has black wheels and exhaust tip, while the Sequoia Nightshade uniquely features darkened chrome ‘Sequoia’ badging, body moldings, and lower grille and fog light surrounds.
The Nightshade Editions look particularly wicked in Midnight Black Metallic or Magnetic Gray Metallic. For more customization, the Tacoma and Tundra are also available in Windchill Pearl*, and the Tundra can also be ordered in Super White. The Sequoia Nightshade offers Blizzard Pearl as an additional choice. *Added Cost Color
Toyota is planning to build 5,000 each of the Tacoma and Tundra Nightshade, and 2,500 Sequoia Nightshade.

With a new bold, yet functional shape stemming from the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K), the 2020 Highlander enables greater capability, comfort and safety than ever before. The all-new 2020 Highlander offers the choice between a powerful V6 or new-generation hybrid powertrain, with the gas version offering an EPA-estimated 23 MPG combined fuel economy and the Hybrid offering a manufacturer-estimated 36 MPG combined fuel economy. Like recent models, the 2020 Highlander features a third row for even more family adventures.
Available in five grades, the Highlander starts with a new L grade, then layers amenities and technology in the LE, XLE, Limited and the top-of-line Platinum. Cutting-edge entertainment and connectivity is provided for all ages through the vehicle’s intuitive and versatile multimedia system, including a new largest in segment 12.3-inch multimedia display on the Platinum grade and 8-inch on all other models. The available new JBL Premium Sound System delivers a whopping 1,200 watts of power to turn any music source into a mobile concert.
The 2020 Highlander gets a grip on any road with a choice of front-wheel drive or three different available all-wheel drive systems — two for the V6 models and a unique AWD system for the Highlander Hybrid. For the Highlander Gas L, LE and XLE models, the optional AWD system can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels to counter wheel slip when necessary. Using the Multi-Terrain Select control dial on the console, drivers can maximize traction when driving through inclement weather or road conditions.
All-Wheel Drive Sedans
In recent years, market demand for AWD passenger vehicles has increased due to the rising popularity of SUVs and crossovers, like the Highlander and the number one-selling vehicle in New England, the RAV4. Toyota is answering this demand by expanding its sedan AWD lineup, introducing the new Camry and Avalon all-wheel drive sedans.
The new Camry AWD has a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine teamed with an 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission and balances added traction with exemplary fuel efficiency with a 202-horsepower engine.
The Camry AWD system can direct up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels, in response to acceleration from a start or slippage at the front wheels, and match their FWD counterparts in critical passenger space, trunk room, ride comfort, cabin quietness and vehicle agility.
All AWD grades will have an optional Cold-Weather Package, with all other standard and optional features carried over from the FWD versions of the LE, XLE, SE and XSE model grades, including the latest Toyota Audio multimedia systems with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The 2020 Camry AWD, America’s best-selling midsize sedan for 17 years, will arrive at dealerships in early spring.
2021 Mirai Sedan Concept
Rebooted as a premium sedan with cutting-edge design, technology and driving performance, the all-new second-generation Mirai is the latest in hydrogen-powered full cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). ]]>The post Toyota’s Fourth Generation 2020 Highlander Redesigned from the Ground Up appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>Just as the first RAV4 launched the compact crossover SUV segment 22 years ago, the original Highlander redefined the midsize family SUV when it arrived in 2001. At a time when most midsize SUVs were truck-based, the Highlander’s unibody structure with four-wheel independent suspension quickly became the template for a new segment of more comfortable and family-friendly SUVs. After adding a third row, the Highlander not only grew in size, but is also now the best-selling retail model in the segment since 2016.
Now, the 2020 Highlander amplifies all qualities while taking on a dramatic new design direction that combines a powerful SUV presence with sophisticated detailing.
The new sophisticated SUV sits on a new vehicle platform called Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K). This robust new foundation, shared with other Toyota models, enables even greater capability, comfort and safety than before.
The fourth-generation Highlander offers the choice between a powerful V6 or new-generation hybrid powertrain, with the gas version offering up to a manufacturer-estimated 24 MPG combined fuel economy and the Hybrid offering up to a manufacturer-estimated 36 combined MPG.
Whether they’re young families or empty nesters exploring a new chapter in life, safety remains a top priority for Highlander customers. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard in all models in the 2020 Highlander. This comprehensive active safety system includes:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection offers automatic braking capability under certain circumstances should the driver not react in time in a system-detected emergency situation. Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Parking Support Braking and Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) are available depending on the model grade.
The 2020 Highlander delivers renowned Toyota value in a choice of five grades, starting with a new L grade, then layering amenities and technology in LE, XLE, Limited and the top-of line Platinum. (The hybrid is offered on all but the L grade.)
The 2020 Highlander offers cutting-edge entertainment and connectivity for all ages through its intuitive and versatile multimedia system, including a new 12.3-inch touchscreen display on the Platinum grade and 8-inch on the other models. The available new JBL Premium Sound System delivers a whopping 1,200 watts of power to turn any music source into a mobile concert.
The midsize SUV segment has become fiercely competitive, and the 2020 Toyota Highlander is ready to take on all.
The Strong, Athletic Type
A sculpted new shape with chiseled lines gives the 2020 Highlander a more powerful stance, yet with a modern, sophisticated attitude. The 2020 Highlander remains a family-friendly SUV, now with capability for bigger family adventures.
Setting off the new design, the L, LE and XLE grades feature a black front grille with silver trim, while the Limited and Platinum grades are distinguished by a black grille with chrome trim and chrome-plated lower rear fascia, premium projector headlamps and the Highlander’s first-ever 20-inch alloy wheels. The Platinum grade stands apart with silver painted front bumper and rear fascia and a unique 20-inch wheel.
Accentuating the 2020 Highlander’s bold lines, the exterior color palette carries over three colors from 2019 (Blizzard Pearl ($425 option), Celestial Silver Metallic and Midnight Black Metallic) while adding five new ones: Magnetic Gray Metallic, Moon Dust (a striking blue premium paint), Ruby Flare Pearl (a daring red premium paint), Blueprint and Opulent Amber (a deep, luxurious brown).
While Highlander’s new design will turn heads everywhere it goes, it’s also highly functional. Greater aerodynamic efficiency reduces wind noise while enhancing vehicle stability, and even the taillights and side mirror designs lend a hand.
The fourth-generation Highlander is 2.36 inches (60mm) longer, all in the cargo area to add even greater cargo volume than before. The second row slides an extra 1.2 inches further up to increase distance between the second and third rows.
The TNGA-K platform, which makes extensive use of high-strength steel, gives the Highlander a stiffer unibody structure than the previous model. Its inherent strength allows tuning for the front strut and rear multi-link suspension that enhances agility and a smaller turning circle while also providing a smoother and quieter ride than before.
The presence of takumi is evident whenever the driver experiences the Highlander’s premium touch and feel in everyday driving. Throughout vehicle development, these highly trained master craftsmen focused on the finest technical details to ensure a higher level of operating smoothness in all driving conditions, especially at everyday speeds.
Take It All with You
Looking sporty does not come at the expense of practicality in the 2020 Highlander. The L and LE grades come standard with a second-row bench for seating for eight, while the XLE and Limited grade come standard with a Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven and the option of a second-row bench for seating for eight. Finally, the Platinum grade will come standard with a Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven.
The 2020 Highlander offers a choice between two advanced powertrains, a gas V6 or a new version of the Toyota Hybrid System.
The 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 is the epitome of smoothness. Its Toyota-innovated D-4S Injection system combines direct fuel injection with port fuel injectors to optimize efficiency, power and emissions in all conditions. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) likewise ensures ideal response and efficiency at all engine speeds.
The package includes a heavy-duty radiator with engine oil cooler and improved fan performance.
This technology reduces fuel consumption and cuts emissions.
Hybrid Aims Even Higher
Toyota made “hybrid” synonymous with high fuel efficiency more than 20 years ago. Later, Toyota introduced the first hybrid SUV in its class, the 2006 Highlander. Leave it to Toyota to again raise the bar for hybrid SUV functionality by making the 2020 model the most fuel-efficient Highlander Hybrid ever.
The new-generation Toyota Hybrid System in the 2020 Highlander Hybrid combines a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motors in a system that’s more compact, and more efficient than before. The gas engine employs Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system by Electric motor (VVT-iE) on the intake camshaft, and VVT-i on the exhaust camshaft. A variable cooling system (electric water pump, electric thermostat) and a fully variable oil pump further improve engine efficiency.
The bottom line is an eye opener for the efficiency-minded: 243 total system horsepower and up to a manufacturer-estimated 36 combined MPG. The latter is a 24-percent improvement over the previous-generation Highlander Hybrid’s 29 combined MPG. Yet, Highlander Hybrid still delivers the everyday acceleration, power and responsiveness that family buyers expect. In another Highlander first, the hybrid is now available in either 2WD or AWD, further expanding hybrid technology to a new group of buyers.
To reduce the transaxle’s size and weight, the reduction gear is now a parallel shaft gear, rather than a planetary gear, and a new multi-function gear integrates the power-split planetary ring gear, parking gear, and counter-drive gear. New computer integration and a smaller, lighter power stack installed directly above the transaxle reduce energy transmission losses.
The battery pack is small enough to be installed under the rear seats, so it does not take up any cargo or passenger space.
Seamless Everyday Performance
The Highlander hybrid delivers its exemplary fuel economy and performance without calling attention to its high-tech powertrain operation. Quite the contrary, like all Toyota Hybrid vehicles, it simply goes about its business in a transparent way. For example, the new system optimizes the level of electric motor assistance and gas engine speed without the engine running at high revs.
Using a sequential shifting feature, the driver can “downshift” to increase the regenerative braking in steps, which fosters greater control when driving in hilly areas, for example.
The 2020 Highlander hybrid can also coach the driver to drive as economically as possible.
Many actual roads chosen to represent common usage scenarios, such as in urban congestion or on mountain roads, were driven on and analyzed to create control that feels natural to the driver when operating to enable more efficient driving.
All-Wheel Drive Gets Smarter
The 2020 Highlander gets a grip on any road with a choice of front-wheel drive or three different available all-wheel drive systems — two for the V6 models and a unique AWD system for the Highlander Hybrid. For the Highlander Gas L, LE and XLE models, the optional AWD system can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels to counter wheel slip when necessary.
Sounding like something from a high-end sports car, Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Drive Mode Select and Driveline Disconnect is available for the Highlander Limited and Platinum for even greater agility and capability. In addition to governing torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, this advanced system uses special couplings to actively manage torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels.
Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD doesn’t need wheel slippage before springing into action. Rather, a sophisticated AWD Integrated Management (AIM) system manages Electric Power Steering (EPS), throttle control, transmission shift control and drive torque distribution to continually optimize handling.
Using the Multi-Terrain Select control dial on the console, the driver can maximize traction when driving through inclement weather or road conditions. Mud & Sand mode works well for beach driving, while Rock & Dirt mode optimizes AWD traction for trails. The driver can monitor, in real time, torque allocation and slip control on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
In addition, Highlander models include the following features for optimal on-road and off-road performance and safety:
All-wheel drive is a great traction partner, but it’s not needed all the time, such as during steady highway cruising. In such situations, Rear Driveline Disconnect automatically disengages drive to the rear wheels and stops the propeller shaft’s rotation. As one might guess, that reduces the energy needed to propel the vehicle and therefore reduces fuel consumption. When AWD is needed, the system instantly re-engages, without the driver even noticing.
Hybrid AWD
As with the AWD system in the previous Highlander Hybrid, the 2020 model’s AWD employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. Like the hybrid powertrain itself, the AWD works seamlessly and transparently.
The rear electric motor operates independently, with no mechanical connection between the transmission and the rear wheels. Preemptively distributing more driving force to the rear wheels, such as when accelerating, helps suppress front wheel slip during off-the-line starts. The system also enhances cornering agility by helping to reduce understeer. And, when venturing onto a trail, the increased rear-wheel torque helps move the Highlander hybrid confidently over rough or slippery surfaces.
A New Level of Comfort
From the L grade to the top-of-line Platinum, the 2020 Highlander offers its plushest accommodations ever. Designers took inspiration from luxury crafted interiors to create a more premium ambience. Details include softer padded surfaces and a more tailored look with stitching that continues from the door trim to the instrument panel. The dash integrates the multimedia and HVAC controls in an elegant and functional way.
The 2020 Highlander cabin offers improved functionality throughout, from a center console that offers available Qi wireless charging to plenty of storage spaces and USB charging ports. On Limited and Platinum grades, new ambient LED lighting sets a relaxing mood. Inset steering wheel controls are a modern luxury touch on all grades.
Highlanders have long been renowned for a quiet ride, and with the high-strength TNGA platform, Toyota pushes the bar even higher. Sound-damping and soundproofing materials have been optimized throughout the vehicle, with the takumi approach focusing particularly on minimizing noise in the frequencies that interfere with conversation. As an example, Limited and Platinum grades have adopted laminated front side window glass to further isolate the driver from outside noise.
The seating color palette enhances the sense of luxury permeating the 2020 Highlander. The L and LE grades offer comfortable woven cloth in Graphite or Black; the XLE offers embossed Softex® artificial leather-trim in Harvest Beige, Graphite or Black, while the Limited offers those colors in perforated leather-trim. The top-of-line Platinum grade, the most luxurious Highlander ever offered, exclusively features embossed, perforated leather-trim in those three colors plus a luxuriously delicious brown called Glazed Caramel.
Multitalented Multimedia
However passengers listen to music and connect with their worlds, the 2020 Highlander is ready with the latest multimedia systems. All grades come standard with Apple Car Play®, Android Auto, Alexa In-Car compatibility, Waze, SiriusXM®, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
All Highlander models come equipped with Toyota Safety Connect with a one-year trial subscription.
LE and above grades offer Service and Remote Connectivity. A move up to XLE or Limited grade offers available Dynamic Navigation. A move up to Platinum grade offers standard Dynamic Navigation and the 12.3-inch screen.
The JBL® Premium Audio System is standard for Limited and Platinum grades and rocks music of all genres with 1,200 watts of power playing through 11 speakers in nine locations. Clari-Fi® technology breathes new life into compressed digital music formats, with the result like a mobile concert. The system will not, however, settle arguments over which music to play.

While Highlander’s new design will turn heads everywhere it goes, it’s also highly functional. Greater aerodynamic efficiency reduces wind noise while enhancing vehicle stability, and even the taillights and side mirror designs lend a hand.
The fourth-generation Highlander is 2.36 inches (60mm) longer than before, all in the cargo area to add even greater cargo volume than before. The second row can be slid an extra 1.2-in. further up to increase distance between the second and third rows.
Throughout vehicle development, these highly trained master craftsmen focused on the finest technical details to ensure a higher level of operating smoothness in all driving conditions – especially at everyday speeds.
Take It All with You
Looking sporty does not come at the expense of practicality in the 2020 Highlander. The L and LE grades come standard with a second-row bench for seating for eight, while the XLE and Limited grades come standard with a Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven and the option of a second-row bench for seating for eight. Finally, the Platinum grade will come standard with a Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven. Either way, the large rear doors provide easy access, while versatile seat folding features make it easy to enter the third row. And, passengers in the third row stay comfortable thanks to standard three-zone climate control that ensures ample flow of warmed or cooled air.
With all seat rows in use, Highlander offers 16.1 cu. ft. of carrying space behind the third row. Folding the 60/40 split fold-flat third-row seatbacks opens the space to 40.6 cu. ft., and then folding the second row increases that to 73.3 cu. ft. The versatile cargo area makes the most of its additional length with side surfaces and pockets shaped for maximum space usage.
Power, Performance and Panache … with Efficiency
Power and efficiency are a whole lot sexier when wrapped in Highlander’s striking design.
The package includes a heavy-duty radiator with engine oil cooler and improved fan performance.
The bottom line is an eye opener for the efficiency-minded: 240 total system horsepower and an EPA-estimated 34 combined MPG. The latter is a 17-percent improvement over the previous-generation Highlander Hybrid’s 28 combined MPG. Yet, Highlander Hybrid still delivers the everyday acceleration, power and responsiveness that family buyers expect. In another Highlander first, the hybrid is now available in either 2WD or AWD, further expanding hybrid technology to a new group of buyers.
To reduce the transaxle’s size and weight, the reduction gear is now a parallel shaft gear, rather than a planetary, and a new multi-function gear integrates the power-split planetary ring gear, parking gear, and counter-drive gear.
Using a sequential shifting feature, the driver can “downshift” to increase the regenerative braking in steps, which fosters greater control when driving in hilly areas, for example.
The 2020 Highlander Hybrid can also coach the driver to drive as economically as possible. For example, an accelerator guide function suggests an acceleration level to the driver according to the driving conditions, and a scoring function adds a measure of fun to eco driving.
Rather, a sophisticated AWD Integrated Management (AIM) manages Electric Power Steering (EPS), throttle control, transmission shift control and drive torque distribution to continually optimize handling.
The seating color palette enhances the sense of luxury permeating the 2020 Highlander. The L and LE grades offer comfortable woven cloth in Graphite or Black; the XLE offers embossed Softex® artificial leather trim in Harvest Beige, Graphite or Black, while the Limited offers those colors in perforated leather trim. The top-of-line Platinum grade, the most luxurious Highlander ever offered, exclusively features embossed, perforated leather trim in those three colors plus Glazed Caramel, a luxuriously delicious new brown.
Multitalented Multimedia
However passengers listen to music and connect with their worlds, the 2020 Highlander is ready with the latest multimedia systems. All grades come standard with Apple Car Play®, Android Auto, Alexa In-Car compatibility, Waze, SiriusXM®, and Wi-Fi connectivity through AT&T.

]]>The post 2018 Toyota Highlander Delivers on Value, Safety Features and Performance for Families of All Sizes appeared first on Toyota USA Newsroom.
]]>Toyota quality, dependability, reliability and value seal the deal for Highlander customers, who also buy for the sleek and strong design that also helps ensure ample visibility for the driver. The front grille on LE, LE Plus and XLE grades features a silver-painted finish, while Limited and Platinum grades have a painted chrome finish. LED taillights raise visibility in all light.
The Highlander and Highlander Hybrid received significant styling, equipment and safety feature upgrades for 2017 and so carry into 2018 unchanged. Notably, all Highlander models are equipped as standard with the advanced Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) driver-assist technology. Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to help detect a preceding pedestrian or a preceding vehicle, TSS-P can help the driver identify a pedestrian or vehicle and automatically apply braking if necessary to help mitigate or avoid frontal collisions in certain conditions. TSS-P includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD) function; Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA) function; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) and Automatic High Beams (AHB).
Even More Safety Features
High-tech safety abounds in Highlander, especially with regard to visibility. All models come equipped with a standard backup camera. On the XLE grade and above, standard Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (BSM w/ RCTA) helps alert drivers to unseen hazards. Blind Spot Monitor uses radar and is designed to detect vehicles in the adjacent lane where drivers may be challenged to see them. When an object is detected, the Blind Spot Monitor indicators flash in the appropriate outside mirror, and a signal also appears on the TFT color multi-information display. The radar also provides Rear Cross Traffic Alert that is designed to detect low-speed cross traffic behind the vehicle when in reverse.
The Highlander Limited Platinum grade takes visibility and safety to new heights with standard Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, which helps improve the driver’s ability to see all around the vehicle.
The Highlander has grown up over the years. The third-generation model is a three-row family SUV with seating for up to eight. For 2018, the Highlander Hybrid remains available in LE, XLE, Limited and Limited Platinum grades. The gas model is offered in LE, LE Plus, SE, XLE, Limited and Limited Platinum, all available in either FWD or AWD.
Family Power
There may be no “free lunch,” but with the right technology, you can get both power and performance. The Highlander makes that point emphatically with the 3.5-liter D-4S Injection V6 that was introduced for 2017. The new engine boosted output to 295 horsepower and 263 lb.-ft. of torque, increases of 25 hp and 15 lb.-ft., respectively, over the previous V6 engine.
Yet, teamed to the Direct Shift – 8AT 8-speed automatic transmission, the more powerful engine also yields better EPA fuel economy estimates for all-wheel drive models: EPA-estimated 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway, versus 18/24 for the 2016 AWD model. The eight ratios, compared to six in the prior transmission, give the Highlander even better acceleration and passing abilities.
Another contributor to fuel economy, Stop and Start Engine System (S&S), is used on all Highlander V6 gas models (excluding LE). At a complete stop, the engine shuts off and then instantly and smoothly restarts when the driver’s foot lifts from the brake pedal.
Room. Lots of Room.
The Highlander shows a mastery of vehicle packaging. It’s just a few inches longer than a midsize sedan yet offers three-row seating and up to 158.7 cu. ft. total cabin volume. A one-step second-row sliding seat function on both driver and passenger sides makes entering the third-row easy. Third-row passengers get a standard recline function.
Even with all seat rows in use, there’s still 13.8 cu. ft. of carrying space behind the third row. Folding the 60/40 split fold-flat third-row seatbacks expands the space to 42.3 cu. ft., and then to 83.7 cu. ft. with the 60/40 split fold-flat second row also lowered.
Should the driver or co-pilot need to convey any special instructions to third-row passengers, such as, “Stop picking on your sister!” there’s no need to shout. The XLE grades and above come standard with Driver Easy Speak, which amplifies and broadcasts the driver’s voice through the audio system’s rear speakers. It makes a good tour guide tool, for parents who are so inclined.
A Soft, Quiet Place
A super-tight body structure, combined with finely tuned MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone style multi-link rear suspension, endow the Highlander with an exceptionally smooth ride. Sound-control features include hydraulic engine mounts, acoustic-type windshield glass, a dash silencer and extensive body sealing.
Upholstery choices begin at the LE’s premium fabric level and progresses into the available SofTex synthetic trim, then to available smooth or perforated leather. The LE Plus grade and above feature contrast stitching on all seats, and on the Limited, wood-grain pattern trim on the dash and doors add elegance. Limited Platinum models feature a unique wood accent. A soft-touch instrument panel and silver-painted, satin, and chrome-plated accents, underscore the Highlander’s premium feel.
A cabin highlight is the roll-top center console that provides a big, comfortable armrest for the driver and front passenger. Its inner storage box is roomy enough to hold a very large handbag. An LCD Multi-Information Display (MID) within the gauge cluster puts vital information in the driver’s line of sight. The LE and LE Plus grades feature a 4.2-inch color screen displaying odometer, current/average fuel economy, cruising range, and an ECO driving indicator. All other grades get a 4.2-inch color LCD MID providing odometer, current/average fuel economy, cruising range, average speed, AWD torque distribution (AWD gas models only), cruise control guide, navigation with turn-by-turn directions, audio status, hands-free incoming call notices, telephone information, ECO driving indicator, and energy monitor (Hybrid models only).
Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
All-wheel drive availability is a given with SUVs, and the V6 Highlander offers an exemplary system. Dynamic Torque Control AWD is a sophisticated driving partner that helps get the vehicle through all sorts of slippery situations.
Taking input from various sensors (vehicle speed, steering speed and angle, throttle angle and yaw rate), Dynamic Torque Control AWD actively governs torque distribution to the rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential. The system automatically shifts to AWD when the steering wheel is turned and when accelerating to help prevent wheel slippage, or when sensors detect wheel slippage in other situations, and can vary front-to-rear torque distribution from 100:0 to 50:50.
Under normal cruising conditions, the system remains in front-wheel drive to reduce fuel consumption. An AWD LOCK switch holds the 50:50 torque split for certain low-speed driving situations in challenging conditions up to 25 MPH. The multi-information display conveys torque-distribution information. A sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system coordinates control of the AWD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering systems to help enhance performance, handling and safety.
SE Grade Lets the Whole Family Feel Sporty
Within the Toyota family, “SE” signifies a model with an added dash of sportiness in the styling and handling. The Highlander SE looks the part with dark paint treatment for the front grille, headlamp housings and roof rails, along with unique 19-inch wheels. The SE treatment gives Highlander more than just an athletic look. Specially tuned front and rear suspension tightens handling agility, giving it more athletic driving manners, too.
Inside, unique black leather-trimmed seats feature striking silver stitching and pattern inserts, plus matching dark dash and door accents. The SE comes as a V6-powered model in FWD or AWD in the seven-seat configuration.
Highlander Hybrid: Higher Power, Higher Fuel Efficiency
The Highlander Hybrid, one of seven hybrid models offered by Toyota for 2018, comes in the choice of LE, XLE, Limited and Limited Platinum grades. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive system also uses the direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, combined here with a high-torque electric drive motor-generator to produce 306 total system horsepower. Needless to say, acceleration and passing performance are quite strong. The Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient Highlander too, with EPA-estimated 29 mpg city/27 mpg highway/28 mpg combined fuel economy ratings.
All Highlander Hybrid models come equipped with Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i) as standard. AWD-i employs a second, independent electric motor to drive the rear wheels when needed to help maintain optimal traction.
Toyota Value in Every Grade
Traditional Toyota value permeates the Highlander family, progressing to outright luxury in the top models. Here’s the rundown:
The LE and LE Plus grades are well-equipped “mono-spec” grades, with no option packages offered. The standard equipment rosters are quite extensive, with the LE featuring:
The “Plus” for the LE Plus grade adds:
The XLE really turns up the comfort:
The SE is the sporty one and adds to or replaces XLE standard features such as:
A Blu-ray DVD rear-seat entertainment system is available for the XLE and SE.
You’re in Luxury Territory Now
The Highlander Limited crosses into luxury territory. It looks the part with a painted chrome grille finish and 19-inch Chromtec alloy wheels. Blue LED ambient lighting around the dash and doors casts an elegant, high-tech glow, and numerous amenities raise the comfort quotient considerably. Seating for seven includes second-row captain’s chairs, perforated leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a 4-way power passenger seat, and memory settings for the driver seat and side mirrors.
Added safety features include rear parking assist sonar, while entertainment is upgraded with Entune Premium JBL Audio with Integrated Navigation and App Suite. Adding the Platinum Package takes Highlander to the top with Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, a panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel, heated second-row captain’s chairs or outboard chairs in the optional bench seat, rain-sensing windshield wipers, dark chrome finish to the Chromtec wheels, puddle lamps that feature a Highlander Projection, and more.
Limited and Limited Platinum grades offer the choice between eight-passenger configuration with a bench-style middle row seat or seven-passenger with middle-row captain’s chairs. The Limited Platinum also offers lavish brown leather interior trim.
Limited Warranty and Toyota Care

Interior updates include a new brown leather interior that will be available on the Limited Platinum grade. Charging personal devices will be more efficient as all Highlanders will add four USB ports for a total of five.
For those looking for a Highlander with all the bells and whistles but require added passenger seating, the premium Limited and Limited Platinum grades will offer buyers the choice of second-row captain’s chairs (providing seating for seven), or second-row bench seats that will expand capacity to eight people.
Sporty New SE Grade
For a touch of sportiness, Highlander will now be available in the new SE model. It starts on the outside with unique 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, tuned suspension for a sportier ride, and a sporty dark paint treatment to the front grille, which is also incorporated into the headlamp housings and roof rails.
Toyota Safety That Makes Sense
The 2017 Highlander will come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS), a new multi- feature advanced safety package anchored by automated pre-collision braking. TSS bundles cutting edge safety technologies including Pre-Collision System (with Forward Collision Warning and automatic emergency brake), Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, Pedestrian Pre- Collision System and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
The Pedestrian Pre-collision System (PCS) uses a camera and radar to detect objects ahead of the vehicle. When the system determines there is a possibility of collision it prompts the driver to brake with an audio and visual alert. If the driver notices the hazard and brakes, the system provides additional braking force. If the driver fails to brake in a set time, the system automatically applies the brakes, reducing speed in order to prevent or mitigate the collision.
Lane Departure Alert (LDA) uses a camera to detect visible lane markings. If the system determines that the vehicle is starting to deviate from the lane, LDA alerts the driver and will provide steering assist to help get the vehicle back into its lane.
Automatic High Beam (AHB) helps enhance forward visibility during nighttime driving. It uses a camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the tail lights of vehicles ahead, and then automatically switches between high beams and low beams so as not to dazzle other drivers.
The Highlander XLE grade will also adopt blind spot monitor as standard equipment.
To help make parking easy and safe, the 2017 Highlander Limited Platinum grade will come standard with a Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan. This Toyota technology employs four cameras that are mounted on the front, the side mirrors and rear of the vehicle to project a panoramic view of the vehicle’s surroundings on the central touch display monitor. The system offers drivers assistance when parallel parking, and when pulling in and out of parking spaces. The Bird’s Eye View Monitor system also debuts a Toyota-first feature called Perimeter Scan, which provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle, helping the driver to see potential obstacles.

]]>TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 3, 2015—The five Toyota Racing Development (TRD) vehicles on display at Toyota’s 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show booth are designed to inspire the imagination of industry professionals and consumers alike. Toyota is looking for actual feedback on these sporty machines.
The five SEMA Edition TRD vehicles—representing a cross-section of five of Toyota’s most popular sedans, SUVs and crossovers—have been modified for sportier good looks and more responsive handling. The quintet is comprised of a SEMA Edition TRD Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander and Land Cruiser.
“We think our SEMA Edition TRD vehicles will surprise many,” said Steve Appelbaum, National Engagement Marketing Manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “These concepts are hot—dare we say sexy—vehicles that are equal parts show and go.”
All of the SEMA Edition TRD concepts feature special edition Silver Pearl paint on the exterior and custom TRD embroidery inside. In addition, all but the Land Cruiser sport a front chin spoiler, aero-inspired rocker panels and rear-end diffuser treatment.
Just as each model plays a different role in the Toyota lineup, each of the SEMA Edition TRD vehicles boasts unique modifications designed to enhance its sporty looks and driving dynamics.
SEMA Edition TRD Avalon
For 20 years, the Toyota Avalon has set the benchmark for the premium midsize sedan category. Toyota’s flagship sedan features an elegant yet athletic exterior design, dynamic performance, and a high level of refinement and technology. The Avalon has proven popular with drivers and passengers alike, allowing them to go places in style and comfort.
Based on the production 2015 Avalon XLE Touring, the SEMA Edition TRD Avalon builds on this winning formula with TRD lowering springs that reduce the vehicle’s ride height by 1.5 inches both front and rear, TRD performance-tuned struts all around, TRD custom free-flow cat-back performance dual exhaust with quad tips, and TRD decklid badging.
The SEMA Edition TRD Avalon rides on 255/35/19 tires wrapped around bronze 19×9-inch TRD performance wheels.
SEMA Edition TRD Camry
The best-selling car in America for the last 13 years was redesigned for 2015 with a bold new look, stiffer body structure, enhanced aerodynamics and its quietest ride ever.
Using the 2015 Camry XSE V6 as a canvas, the artists at TRD used TRD lowering springs to lower the vehicle by 1 inch up front and 1.5 inches in back, for better aerodynamics, improved traction and handling, and a more aggressive stance. Both the look and the handling are enhanced by 21×9.5-inch bronze TRD performance wheels surrounded by 255/35/21 tires.
TRD performance-tuned struts, brake pads, and custom free-flow cat-back performance dual exhaust complete the package.
SEMA Edition TRD Corolla
America’s best-selling compact car—and, in fact, the best-selling automotive nameplate in history—the Toyota Corolla is justifiably popular for its sporty styling, outstanding fuel economy and “class above” interior room.
The 2016 Corolla LE Eco is the MPG champ of the line, but it’s also a strong performer with the highest-powered engine of any Corolla, delivering eight more horsepower than the other models. That made it the ideal candidate for a SEMA Edition TRD makeover.
The production Corolla LE Eco puts that power to the pavement through a continuously variable transmission. In the SEMA Edition TRD Corolla, the CVT is replaced by a TRD six-speed manual, for a sportier driving experience. Performance is further enhanced by a TRD custom free-flow cat-back single exhaust system.
Adding to the driving fun are 255/30/19 tires and bronze 19×9-inch TRD performance wheels. The SEMA Edition TRD Corolla hugs the road with a ride height that’s 1 inch lower in front and 1.5 inches lower in the rear than the production Corolla.
SEMA Edition TRD Highlander
The Toyota Highlander started the midsize crossover SUV category 15 years ago, so it had a head start on becoming a benchmark. The SEMA Edition TRD Highlander raises the bar even higher, with the most significant interior upgrades of any of the SEMA Edition TRD concepts. In addition to TRD seats, the cabin of the concept Highlander has been completely redone in dramatic full black with red accents, from dash panel to door panels.
The Highlander’s stock tires and wheels were replaced by 285/35/20 tires and 20×10-inch bronze TRD performance wheels front and rear.
With a ride height that’s 1 inch lower up front and 1.5 inches in back, the SEMA Edition TRD Highland is the crossover that crosses the line from popular people-hauler to stealth SUV.
SEMA Edition TRD Land Cruiser
Toyota has sold Land Cruiser models in the United States continually since 1957. Over the last nearly 60 years, the Land Cruiser has evolved from a utilitarian go-anywhere vehicle to one of the most luxurious full-capability SUVs on the market. The SEMA Edition TRD Land Cruiser, based on the redesigned 2016 model, takes this iconic Toyota to new heights—literally.
While the rear of the SEMA Edition TRD Land Cruiser is at stock ride height, the front end has been raised a full two inches, for even more impressive ground clearance and angle of approach. A TRD skid plate protects the underbody of the vehicle.
Up front, the production suspension has been enhanced by TRD adjustable remote-reservoir coilover shock absorbers, while TRD adjustable remote-reservoir shocks and springs augment the rear suspension.
Exterior details of the concept vehicle serve both style and substance. They include a TRD brush guard with LED driving lights; a TRD performance off-road air snorkel; bronze-colored TRD tubular running boards; and a roof-mounted cargo pod. In back, the TRD performance cat-back dual-tip exhaust features an innovative offset design that’s as smart as it is functional.
The finishing touches for the ultimate Toyota SUV? 285/55/20 tires and TRD 20×10-inch performance wheels front and rear.
Toyota Wants Your Opinion
TRD staff will be on hand at the Toyota display—and at the nearby TRD trailer, adjacent to the Toyota booth on the Patio Annex—throughout the run of the 2015 SEMA Show, asking journalists and visitors their opinions of the concept vehicles.
“The Toyota Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander and Land Cruiser already do everything that
vehicles in their respective segments need to do, and do them exceedingly well,” said Appelbaum. “We believe the SEMA Edition TRD versions of these vehicles will appeal to a crowd that needs a great all-around vehicle plus even more sportiness. We’re anxious to gauge public response to these concepts.”
The SEMA Edition TRD vehicles—along with numerous other Toyota specialty vehicles—will be found in the Toyota display booth (#24700) in Central Hall and on the Patio Annex of the Las Vegas Convention Center, November 3-6, 2015.
